What we are.
The Danish Buddhist Society is a small society forming in Denmark. The society takes its bearings from the Buddha's earliest teachings, preserved in the Pāli suttas, and draws inspiration from teachers in the Thai Forest tradition through Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Brahm.
The society is open for all people regardless of background, and all teachings are freely given. One of our values is to create equal opportunities for both nuns and monks to take full ordination. The society takes Ajahn Nitho and Ajahn Canda to be our spiritual teachers and they are both disciples of Ajahn Brahm.
DDBF was started by Jesper and Julie, father and daughter from the southern part of Denmark. Two practitioners, with a deep wish to see the teachings of bliss, peace and ending suffering being accessible to all, decided to initiate an open door to this practice in Denmark.
The society is still taking shape. Our first concrete event is a silent meditation retreat in November 2026 with Ajahn Nitho.
Our background.
The Buddha's earliest teachings have been carried down through many schools. Besides taking our roots in the early buddhist teachings, the society also draws its inspiration particularly from the Thai Forest tradition: a meditation school within Theravāda, renewed at the end of the nineteenth century by Ajahn Sao and his student Ajahn Mun, and best known in our time through Ajahn Chah (1918 to 1992).
Ajahn Chah received Western monks from 1966 onwards, and it is through them that this lineage spread widely through Europe and Australia. DDBF is connected to it through Ajahn Brahm, who trained for nine years under Ajahn Chah, and through Ajahn Nitho, who was ordained by Ajahn Brahm in 2009 and later trained under Ajahn Ganha in Thailand.
